Ask our leaders to cut through the red tape and pass a comprehensive, national strategy to fight world hunger.
Right now, more than one billion people around the world go to bed hungry each night. That's more than triple the population of the U.S. alone.
With a smart strategy, we can cut hunger in half by 2015. However, U.S. food security and hunger relief programs are spread over dozens of federal agencies, hampering the effort to provide coordinated and effective aid to the world's most vulnerable.
Urge Congress to support H.R. 2817, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009. The bill lays out recommendations for a comprehensive national plan to not only fight hunger, but create opportunities that will allow families around the world to make sure they can feed themselves next month, next year and 10 years from now.
Tell our elected officials you want to know who is in charge and who to hold accountable. The Roadmap:

Colleen Malone-Engel (not verified) @ Wed, 07/29/2009 - 8:07pmPlease support H.R. 2817, the Roadmap to End Global Hunger and Promote Food Security Act of 2009. As I'm sure you know, the bill lays out recommendations for a comprehensive national plan to not only fight hunger, but create opportunities that will allow families around the world to make sure they can feed themselves next month, next year and 10 years from now. By helping families feel themselves, they will be able to raise their children to be productive members of their communities, able to live better lives, help others. Everyone can and will win if we can attend to this very basic need. |

Anonymous (not verified) @ Wed, 07/29/2009 - 8:19pmWe can help so many people with so little. While our cups run over with the blessings we have recieved, can we sit by idly while 1 billion people go to bed tonight hungry? Hunger pains is not just a word - hunger hurts. Hunger disempowers. Hunger destroys lives and futures. Mothers watch their children fade away when all they need is nutritios food. That is all. Nutritious food can end the hopelessness and hurt of many. Will you help? Please do what you can. That is all we ask. |

Debra (not verified) @ Wed, 07/29/2009 - 9:36pmI do believe there is no reason that anyone should ever go hungry. Maybe if all the restaurants didn't make so much food and have to throw it out later in the day. What about all the farmers that have to take less money for their goods because they grew too much or it was getting old. Maybe if the government paid more to the farmers for the food and take it to the food banks to contribute to the poor and hungry. Watch those on food stamps and aide to make sure the money goes to feed and and clothe the children, not for them to drive new cars. |

George M. Carter (not verified) @ Wed, 07/29/2009 - 11:19pmAnother aspect to hunger, food insecurity and starvation: infectious disease. Some data show that viruses and other pathogens may actually become more virulent, more dangerous in people who are malnourished. It is in EVERYBODY'S interest, let alone the simple notion of humanitarian decency, to wipe out hunger. In addition, population pressures may be eased as well-nourished individuals tend to have fewer children. The world is in danger--this is one way to help minimize the global dangers we face. |

(Rev.) Richard M Leliaert (not verified) @ Thu, 07/30/2009 - 7:01pmI suggest that the Mercy Corps Action Center have their Website or computer personnel design a prepared letter which we then could send to our representatives as is or edit it to our personal style. The reality is that many committed people are also pressed for time. Yes, hunger is important, but myriads of other worthy organizations also press us to write or call our reps regarding their issues, and it becomes more difficult. I hope you can find a way to make this happen, as they say. |

tamika navonne huff (not verified) @ Thu, 07/30/2009 - 8:49pmhello,we see kids in comericals, in poor countries. Lets , wake up america, it is high time we do something to save those poor kids . It's doesn't make any sense, meaning people who can afford or act as if they can , buy clothes, lots of clothes, go on monthly, yeah even daily trips to the hair salons, get drink beer daily, go on cruises, have yachts, house, not one , even manison, um, at least two, or okay five,. I know that some of you might not of grown up poor, but, in my opinion, honest opinion, i am a 34 year young woman, don't have many friends, was teased all through grade- high school, but I am healthy ,I have a nice family. It just shows that not everyone poor is sad, nor ,everyone who is rich is actually happy,Yeah you have memberships to several gof clubs, have yachts, can travel whenever you so desire, etc. |

The biggest blasphemy in the world that crosses all faiths, western (occident) and eastern alike: 30,000 people die every day due to hunger and hunger-related disease while a billion people live in excess and wasted resources. That's TEN silent 911's EVERY SINGLE DAY on this planet. What is wrong with us???
All that is missing is the political will to move in the direction to lead the developed world into a program to ensure that nobody who does not desire to be hungry go to bed hungry. Let's get started; let's begin to turn our global empire of entrenched self-interest into a shared umbrella of hope and compassion.a
HR2817 is a good start. We promised this MDG by 2015, so let's start to play catch-up.
